Academic Research And Western Michigan UniversityWestern Michigan University is a public institution. The main campus of the university is located in Kalamazoo, while the original campus is known today as the East Campus and comprises many historic buildings constructed during the early history of the university.
Western Michigan University first showed signs of growth in 1940s, when millions of people were provided with the possibility of receiving a higher education in the post war period. This resulted in a 4,000 student increase in the student body at the university. As of fiscal year 2005, it has an enrollment of 26,000 students: 21,500 undergraduates and 4,800 graduate students, who are offered as many as 254 degree programs in 9 colleges.
There are 152 programs for undergraduates and 71 Master's, 29 Doctoral and 2 Specialist programs for graduate students, all of which have gained national recognition.
The colleges, comprising Western Michigan University include the College of Aviation, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, the Haworth College of Business, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Fine Arts, the Graduate College and the Lee Honors College. One of the most celebrated is the College of Aviation, considered one of the largest aviation programs in the country, and the Haworth College of Business, offering the oldest Master of Business Administration program in the state.
Logistically speaking, the university is divided into four campuses, including West Campus, East Campus, Parkview Campus and Oakland Drive Campus. West Campus in turn is comprised of several branch campuses throughout Michigan, including Battle Greek, Grand Rapids, Holland, Lansing, Muskegon, South Haven, Benton Harbor and Traverse City.
Today Western Michigan University is seen as one of the most successful and prospective universities in the nation. The U. S. News and World Report included Western Michigan University in its list of the U.S. top 100 public universities. The faculty and staff of the university conduct approximately $40 million in research in fields ranging from developing technology to mathematics education and nuclear physics.
Among the celebrated alumni of the institution are Robert Bruininks, the President of the University of Minnesota; U. S. representative Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, Terry Crews, actor; Neil Smith, general manager of the New York Rangers; Jason Babin, National Football League Player and Dennis Archer, the President of the American Bar Association.
